Standing with the LGBTQ+ community in Christ

We, the undersigned United Methodist pastors, called to ministry in North Central Washington, are deeply troubled and saddened by the decision of our denomination to continue discrimination against our LGBTQ+ siblings. We recognize the deep hurt this rejection inflicts upon you. We are shamed by and reject any theology that uses the Bible to exclude, oppress, or judge others. We believe that God’s grace and love is given to all, regardless of gender identification or sexual orientation. We are all beloved children of God. The call to ordained ministry and the blessedness of covenantal marriage is open to all.

We do not know what the future holds for The United Methodist Church, but we will continue to work for justice and inclusion of all people. We are a global denomination and have fought long and hard for equal representation of our churches in Africa, Europe, Russia, Korea and the Philippines. We are theologically diverse: conservative, centrist and progressive. We believe this makes us stronger. It also carries risks. An estimated two-thirds of the U.S. delegates voted for a more inclusive plan, but globally, it was rejected in favor of the “Traditionalist Plan” by a narrow margin. Disheartening this is, but it is not the end of the story. And it will not stop our Pacific Northwest Conference from ordaining LGBTQ+ persons, nor prevent us from officiating at their weddings.

We commit ourselves to standing with the LGBTQ+ community for justice in our church and in our communities. ALL persons are of sacred worth and we insist that ALL persons are entitled to have their human rights ensured.

We are United Methodists called to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. With guidance from God, we will continue that work.
